My research group seeks to understand the molecular details of post-transcriptional gene expression regulation, in particular translation and mRNA decay. We are especially interested how a small, only recently described group of proteins, RNA binding E3 ubiquitin ligases (RBE3L), and RNA helicases influence the translation and decay machinery. We recombinantly produce proteins and protein complexes (mainly bacteria and insect cells) and use them for functional studies and in vitro reconstitution (such as in vitro translation and deadenylation). Translation and mRNA decay complexes are subsequently analyzed by an integrative structural biology approach (cryogenic electron microscopy, macromolecular crystallography, in silico structure prediction (AlphaFold) and crosslinking mass spectrometry.
