This course will cover various aspects of data exploration, description, and visualization, paving the way to understanding basic statistical concepts. The course will take place on May 27th, 2025, from 9 AM to 4 PM CEST. It is open to everyone but specifically designed for beginners in data visualization and statistics. The course is free of charge.

By the end of this one-day course, you will be familiar with the key vocabulary used in data description. You will learn how to effectively summarize your data and understand what methods to use or avoid. You will explore different types of plots and learn which are best suited for various data types. The course includes examples of effective data visualization from the literature, and we will also discuss how to identify misleading visualizations.

Basic Aspects of Probability Theory: Sets, Probabilities, Bayes' Theorem, Paradoxes
The Concept of Samples: Population, Sample, Observation, Types of Variables
Plots: Histograms, Distributions, Scatter Plots and Correlations, Q-Q Plots, Boxplots, Violin Plots, Swarm Plots, Outliers
Data Visualization: Fundamental Concepts, Examples from the Literature, Dos and Don'ts
Tables: Alignment, Number of Digits
