Learning to use Git is an essential skill if you use any programming language. It allows you to keep track of changes to your project over time, collaborate with others, and maintain a clear and organized project structure.

The main goal of this crash-course is to give you the basic skills you need to start using Git for your own research projects both individually and in collaboration with your colleagues. You will learn a complete Git workflow including remote repositories on Github both in theory and practice.

Forum Junge Spitzenforschung Science Competition // Nov 19 // Application until Oct 27

 

Once a year, the Stiftung Industrieforschung and the Berlin universities look for young scientists with original and practically relevant ideas and approaches to solutions that have emerged from their innovative basic research as part of the "Forum Junge Spitzenforschung" science competition. This year, the focus is on „Food & Nutrients“.

 

We search for innovative ideas from young researchers that, for example, target the agricultural sector as a major producer of climate-damaging emissions or open up urban areas for agriculture. Whether excellent research is a basis for future innovations to ensure healthy nutrition or contributes to the prevention of nutrition-related illness - across all sections of the population and/or in crisis situations. Application ideas that focus on animal welfare in the production of milk, eggs and meat or that keep agricultural soils and groundwater healthy and clean for future generations. Fresh ideas from researchers for innovations in the value chain, in (refrigerated) storage or at the point of sale, so that food reaches us healthy and tasty. More secure and sustainable food thanks to microbiome research or the optimisation of yields and nutrient content through innovative systems and the integration of new technologies. Research in the field of Food & Nutrients lays the foundation for us to better meet the global challenges of our time.

Klaus Tschira Boost Fund by the GSO & Klaus Tschira Stiftung

The Klaus Tschira Boost Fund promotes excellent researchers by providing

• flexible funding for independent, explorative, risky, and interdisciplinary projects;
• support in building (international) collaborations and networks;
• targeted mentoring and advice on professional and personal development.

The Boost Fund gives postdoctoral researchers greater flexibility in shaping their career paths, accelerating their careers, and promoting early independence.

The 6^th KT Boost Fund will fund 15 new fellows. Projects can start between April 1 and October 1, 2025. It is possible to apply for funding of up to € 120,000 for a period of up to 24 months. Funding can be used for all types of costs – but no more than € 65,000 to (partially) cover the fellow’s salary. In addition, fellows profit from a 4-part career development workshop series, get access to the GSO’s career advice & coaching services, and become members of the exclusive alumni network AlumNode.

Berlin Science Week // Nov 1 – 10

 

Every year Berlin Science Week transforms the city into a vibrant festival of scientific ideas, exploration and experimentation. This year’s Berlin Science Week theme, Common Ground, is more relevant than ever. In a year marked by elections and increasing concerns about misinformation and polarisation, you are invited to step out of your echo chamber, challenge your preconceptions and embrace new perspectives.  

Over the course of 10 days, a lively program of over 300 events will be offered in the two dynamic festival hubs as well as at various other venues in the city and online.

Good Research Practice Week 2024 // Nov 25 - 28

 

Dear members of Freie Universität,

 

With the Executive Board's commitment to promoting scientific integrity in all aspects of research, teaching, and studying in mind, it is my pleasure to invite you to our upcoming Good Research Practice Week 2024, which Freie Universität Berlin is putting on for the second year in a row.

 

From November 25 to 28, 2024, the university will host a series of events that highlight different facets of research integrity from artificial intelligence to effective mentoring to plagiarism pitfalls and the publishing process. We are especially excited to announce this year's keynote speaker, Professor Weber-Wulff of HTW Berlin - University of Applied Sciences, who will give a talk on "Artificial Intelligence in Education and Research" on Wednesday, November 27. We also hope you will join us for the final panel discussion on Thursday, November 28, where experts will discuss the challenges involved in defending research integrity.

 

Please note that while the majority of events will be held in German, the program does include several workshops in English. The events are open to all members of the university. We look forward to seeing you there!

Workshop “Starter Kit Academic Teaching” - in English // March 13-14, 2025

 

This “Starter Kit” provides an introduction to academic teaching. In addition to discussing some basics of teaching and learning in higher education, we will cover topics such as course design and student activation. We will practice and discuss various teaching methods and tools. There will be time slots to work on your own course designs and to discuss these with your peers. This workshop will help you to reflect upon your role as a lecturer and to deal with multiple expectations.
