What you need to know, in a nutshell:

Freie Universität offers a variety of master's programs in the field of biology, each tailored to meet specific educational and professional goals:

  • The M. Sc. program in Biology is designed to enhance both theoretical understanding and practical skills in biology, while also delving into the latest methods and techniques employed in biological research. Students have the flexibility to specialize in one or more areas, with a total of 60 credit points available. Courses are conducted in both English and German to cater to diverse student needs.
  • The M. Sc. program in Biodiversity, Evolution, and Ecology focuses on expanding knowledge in the realms of ecology, evolution, and biodiversity. This program offers an in-depth exploration of the methods and techniques essential for modern research in these fields. Courses are conducted in English.

The Master's degree program offers a comprehensive exploration of biology, covering both the fundamental scientific principles and experimental methodologies essential for biological research. Through the utilization of model systems spanning plants, animals, and microorganisms, students gain a robust understanding of diverse biological realms, facilitating nuanced insights into current research domains.

Students engage in research projects within institute working groups, where they apply learned methods and concepts to real-world scientific inquiries. The program fosters interdisciplinary connections, allowing for collaborative ventures across various fields of study (e.g. chemistry, medicine, pharmacy) within the project domain.

Furthermore, students have the opportunity to tailor their education through elective modules, enabling specialization within the following fields:

Students are not entitled to a specific specialization. So far, however, all students have received their chosen specialization.

The M. Sc. program in Biodiversity, Evolution, and Ecology is designed to enhance understanding and proficiency in theoretical and practical aspects of Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity. Students are exposed to a wide array of methods and experimental techniques crucial for modern biodiversity and ecological research. The program encompasses a comprehensive range of subjects, including the chemical and molecular ecology of animals, plants, and microorganisms, aquatic ecology, ecological modeling, as well as the evolution and biodiversity of various organisms. Additionally, students gain insights into collection management and curation practices.

Throughout the program, students engage in research projects within institute working groups, applying learned methods and concepts. The program fosters interdisciplinary connections, allowing for collaborative ventures across various fields of study within the project domain. Importantly, all courses within this program are conducted in English, further facilitating a globally inclusive learning environment.

There are no tuition fees at Freie Universität Berlin. However, there is a semester fee that is due once per semester.
This fee may vary from semester to semester, for the Summersemester of 2025 it is around 330€. Find more information here.

Please note that enrollment only takes place once the corresponding amount has been transferred to the account of Freie Universität Berlin. There is also a late fee if you miss the deadline.

There are different ways of funding your studies. StudierendenWERK Berlin provides funding after German Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). The deparment has Female Promotion Programms, internal and external (in german).

The Student Office and the Student Representatives are staffed by biology students who are happy to help with any questions that may arise and report on their everyday life at Freie Universität. Please note that their websites are (currently) only available in german.
