Professorships

The department has 41 professorships:

  •     Biology: 16 (5 women, 11 men)
  •     Chemistry and Biochemistry: 18, five of which are prematurely reassigned (5 women, 13 men)
  •     Pharmacy: 7 (3 women, 4 men)

There are also two junior professorships, three professorships outside the structure and eight special professorships in the department, six of which are held by women.


Employees

At the department work...

  • approx. 200 academic employees in structural positions (excluding externally funded positions), of which approx. 40% are women
  • approx. 200 employees for technology, service and administration in structural positions (excluding externally funded positions), of which approx. 66% are women
  • approx. 230 employees from third-party funds, of which approx. 50% are women

Teaching

The department had a total of approx. 3,877 students in 2025.

  • Biology: 1,420
  • Chemistry and Biochemistry: 1,700
  • Pharmacy: 760

Doctorates and Habilitation

Currently, approximately 850 doctoral students are supervised. In 2025, 144 doctorates were completed:85

  • Biology: 46
  • Chemistry: 38
  • Biochemistry: 40
  • Pharmacy: 20

Two habilitation were also completed in 2024.

Research and External Funding

At the Department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, around 27,1 million euros in third-party funding was approved for research projects in 2024:

  • Biology: approx. 6.9 million euros
  • Chemistry and Biochemistry: approx. 18.2 million euros
  • Pharmacy: approx. 1.9 million euros
