Our research focuses on the RNA biology of the extremophilic red alga, C. merolae. We have used this genetically streamlined organism to investigate its vestigial RNA splicing system and the evolutionary preservation of only 39 introns. We are currently working with the Schubert lab on projects to examine C. merolae’s responses to heat stress and to learn more about its habitat and behavior in the wild.
