KURZE ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Photoelectrochemical processes at semiconductor electrodes are investigated by photocalorimetry. Potential-dependent heat production at the illuminated electrode is monitored and analyzed to give the internal quantum and energy conversion efficiency as well as the Peltier heat of the electrode process. The energy efficiency obtained by photocalorimetry represents the upper limit attainable with a given electrode operating in a real fuel-producing or regenerative cell. Applications of photocalorimetry include testing of solar energy materials, power balance analysis, studies of entropy changes in photoelectrochemical reactions and determination of faradaic efficiencies of competing reactions such as photocorrosion of the semiconductor and photooxidation of solute species. Another field of interest is the application of photothermal spectroscopy as a new in-situ technique for obtaining optical constants of semiconductor films prepared by electroplating.
